Michael in 2.39:1

Enough bragging about myself. It’s time to talk about people who had inspired me, gave me good advices, helped and are just great persons in general!

To start with here is Michael Møller Sørensen – person with whom I share love for bmx, cinema and a pair of socks (ok, that’s not true). We met when I was studying in Aarhus, Denmark. That was a day when I cruised down with my bike to local skatepark and saw him pedaling around concrete park. And that’s it, we started to talk and got to know each other. Still every time when I’m on my bike, I’m amazed how many awesome people I’ve met while riding bmx. Especially in Denmark where at the beginning I didn’t knew anybody, bmx helped me to meet great people who otherwise I wouldn’t.

We did this photo session as a farewell to each other – next day, after 2 years of studies , I was going back home to Latvia. Place of which we agreed upon was Godsbanen - freight yard under construction which is going to be converted in massive culture and art center. And also great location for photography and/or filming. The open train yard close to it with graffiti writings on cars, rusty bridge, train tracks – small urban paradise.

The decision to make photos look like shots from movie wasn’t intended in the beginning (I did the post for these pictures almost 4 months after I took them). But when I thought of them couple of days, I understood that cinema look would be right what’s needed since Michael is filming videos and studies it. 2.39:1 is common aspect ratio used in cinemas and I had to crop out a lot of the frame, because again – that wasn’t planned in the beginning. If it would, then definitely with that in mind I’d compose image with a lot more space around Michael.

Right now Michael is somewhere on his way around half the world. For approx. 3 months he’s been traveling around Asia and USA. Actually, I have no clue where in the world (literally)  he is now. I envy him about this. Cheers bru, I hope we meet soon. Maybe in Estonia at Simpel Session ;)

Much luv,
Janis
